One very cool feature of Windows Vista – especially for machines not natively equipped with the kind of horsepower to fully enjoy the rich visuals of Windows Presentation Foundation (Avalon) applications is ReadyBoost. ReadyBoost enables you to plug a USB key into your machine and have Windows Vista use it as memory. I hadn’t actually used this myself, but had heard of it long ago. When a reader emailed me asking if this was an urban legend, I decided to check it out for myself and was very impressed with how easy and seamless the process is.
Installing/Configuring the USB Key as Memory
First I took a standard USB 2.0 key (I’ll list the prerequisites shortly) and plugged it into my machine. I’m running Windows Vista Beta 2, Build 5346, but I’m told that this works with the latest CTP made available to beta and TAP members as well as MSDN Subscribers. Upon plugging the USB key into my computer, I was greeted with the standard "AutoPlay" dialog box asking how I wanted to the operating system to treat the USB key. However, with ReadyBoost I get the additional option (circled below in the screen capture) of using the key to "speed up my system".
Once I click the "Speed up my system" option, the Properties dialog box for the device is displayed where I can specify to start/stop ReadyBoost usage of the device and how much space I want used as a memory cache. (Actually, according to one of the Product Specialists here, this space is used more as a flash-based page file than true RAM, but the impact is that the more space you choose here, the more benefit you’ll get in terms of overall system performance.)
(In order to return to this dialog box, open the Computer window, right-click the drive (F: in this case) and select Properties. From there, click the Memory tab (as shown in the previous screen capture and adjust the settings as needed).
For the inquisitive, opening the drive in an Explorer window reveals that ReadyBoost has created a cache file of the specified size.

Click the Start button. Click the Run command and type regedit in the Open text box. Click OK. As always, be very careful when editing the Registry. In the Registry Editor, go to the following registry key:HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management Right click the DisablePagingExecutive entry in the right pane of the Registry editor and click Modify. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type the number "1" (without the quotes) in the Value data field. Click OK. Close the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

have tested it with XP 2000 and 2003. Windows 98 is currently not available to me for testing.

There are two equal recommendations in this category. First there is AVG Antivirus 7 Free Edition. This product [1] has been continuously refined since it was first released in 1991 and the recently released V7.5 makes further improvements to an already solid product. Additionally, it's relatively small, light on resources, has regular automatic updates and handles email scanning. There is a free and a pro version, the only difference being that the free version has a few non-critical features disabled and has no direct technical support. Equally effective is the free Avast! scanner [2] though its funky media player style interface is not to everyone's taste. Avast! also required periodic re-registration while AVG does not. However Avast! does not seem to suffer the signature file update problems that plague some AVG users. A possible third choice is the AOL Anti Virus Shield [3]. This is a cut down version of the top rated Kaspersky AV and is being made available for free to all uses not just AOL members. On first sight it seems like an unbeatable deal but it's not quite what it seems. First this really is a "lite" version. It lacks the important html and heuristics modules present in the full Kaspersky product so the protection afforded against hostile web sites is actually inferior to AVG and Avast!. Gone, too, is the ability to create rescue disks and to fully manage the quarantine area. The configuration options are also more limited. Secondly the End User License Agreement is worrying. AOL basically reserves the right to spam you. I'm not aware of this actually happening but you need to be aware they have the right to do so. By default AOL AVS installs the AOL search bar in Internet Explorer as part of the AVS install. If you don't want it, make sure you opt out during installation. So on balance I'm cautious about recommending AOL AVS. If you can however, live with the limitations then you'll be rewarded with a first class scanner. Both AVG and Avast! are excellent free products that will meet the needs of most users. However neither can be considered to be the best available. That title belongs to commercial products like NOD32, F-Secure, the full version of Kaspersky AV and others. They are however capable packages and offers the financially challenged a real alternative to the major anti-virus suites. However if you use these free products in conjunction with a free on-demand scanner, you can achieve a level of detection approaching that of the best commercial products. Further improvement is possible by creating a layered defense using additional free security products such as AVG Anti-Spyware (formerly Ewido). On-demand scans should be run regularly, at least weekly, to check for viruses and other malware that may have been missed by your main scanner. If you don't use AOL AVS as your main AV product then this should be your the top choice as an on-demand scanner as its detection is outstanding. You should though, disable the AOL AVS real time monitor otherwise you may run into conflicts with the monitor on your primary AV product. Another top recommendation for an on-demand scanner is AntiVir Personal Edition Classic [4]. It offers significantly better detection rates than either AVG or Avast! but the lack of email scanning precludes recommendation as a primary scanner. However as an on-demand scanner, it's first rate. If you use it in this role, make sure you disable its resident virus guard during installation to prevent it interfering with your main AV scanner.Even so , it's quite an intrusive product -you will certainly be well aware of its presence. Note that the recently released V7 unfortunately introduces a time limited license though apparently this will be renewable. Yet another good option for on-demand scanning is the free version of the commercial AV product BitDefender [5]. It's a first class product with outstanding detection rates but as the free version lacks an email scanner and a resident virus guard, it's only really suited for use as an on-demand scanner rather than your main AV product. There are some other limitations as well. First it has an annoying habit of detecting malware products that have been quarantined by other security products and you can't exclude these areas from subsequent scans. Secondly, it is only available on a one year non-renewable license.

How to: Hide files in .JPEG images

So, basically you compress your files into a .rar archive and copy them into an innocent-looking .jpeg image. (You’ll need WinRar to make .rar’s)

The only thing that will look suspicious, is the file size which (depending on what you’re hiding) can be quite large.

Step 1: Make a new folder, in this case, C:\Hidden. Move your files into it and compress the files with WinRAR.

Step 2: Open the Command Prompt by typing cmd into the Run box from the Start Menu.

Type cd.. into the prompt and press enter. Do this again, until you’re int the root of the Local Disk (Typically C://) directory.Type cd hidden to get to the /hidden folder you made earlier.

Now enter the following code: copy /b picture.jpg + files.rar hiddenfiles.jpg

Replace picture.jpg with the name picture you want to use (it must be in your /hidden folder), files.rar with the name of the .rar archive of your secret files and hiddenfiles.jpg with the name of the picture you want to create.

Step 3: To access the files you hid into the picture, open WinRAR and choose File -> Open Archive and navigate to your C:/hidden/ folder.

Choose All Files from the dropdown box in the bottom and look for the picture hiddenfiles.jpg (or what you named it) and open it. Now you should your files in WinRAR and you can unzip them to where you like.

You probably know most of XP’s useful shortcuts, but did you know that you can make your own shortcuts to programs? To do this, right click the shortcut icon of a program (in the desktop or preferably in the start menu) and click Properties.

Select the Shortcut tab and click the Shortcut box. Type Ctrl + Alt + W (In this example, were making a shortcut to Word). You can only make Ctrl + Alt shortcuts, by the way. Press ok and you’re done!

It’s better to make shortcuts to Start Menu entries, as they are less likely to get deleted.

Here’s a quick tip for anyone who has to do a PowerPoint presentation and would like to insert a video from a video-sharing web site like YouTube, MySpace, iFilm, Break.com, MetaCafe, etc into their PowerPoint presentation. There are a few different ways you can do this, one of which is to get a program to download the video from YouTube, then use another program to convert it to a format that PowerPoint will accept, and then finally insert it into your slide.

Get a New IP Address Even If You Have a Static IP

To start off, you need a direct connection to your modem and computer. If you have a router, disconnect it and directly hook up your modem to your computer.

1. Open up the command prompt by pressing Start->Run and typing in cmd

2. In the command prompt, type “Ipconfig/all”. This will tell you your current IP Address. After, type “ipconfig/release”. Keep the command prompt open for easy access.

3. Go to “Network Connections” (accessible through the control panel). Right click “Local Area Connection” and click “Properties”

4. With “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) selected, click the “Properties” button.

5. A new window will open. Under the “General” tab, select “Use the Following IP address”. Under “Ip Address”, put “10.0.0.1″. Press the “Tab” key on your keyboard.

6. Press Ok on both open windows.

7. Repeat steps 3-4. Under the “General” tab, press the radio button “Automatically Assign Me an Ip Address”. Press ok on both windows.

8. Go back to the command prompt and type in “Ipconfig/all”. You’ll now notice you have a new IP address.

So, this will be handy if you want to by-pass Rapidshare 1 hour download limit, provided that you have a static IP address.

1. Find the Face Behind the Result – This is a neat trick you can use on a Google Image search to filter the search results so that they include only images of people. How is this useful? Well, it could come in handy if you are looking for images of the prominent people behind popular products, companies, or geographic locations. You can perform this search by appending the code &imgtype=face to the end of the URL address after you perform a standard Google Image search.

Google + Social Media Sites = Quality Free Stuff – If you are on the hunt for free desktop wallpaper, stock images, Wordpress templates or the like, using Google to search your favorite social media sites is your best bet. The allinanchor: Google search operator can save you large quantities of time when a normal textual based search query fails to fetch the information you desire. It conducts a search based on keywords used strictly in the anchor text, or linking text, of third party sites that link to the web pages returned by the search query. In other words, this operator filters your search results in a way such that Google ignores the title and content of the returned web pages, but instead bases the search relevance on the keywords that other sites use to reference the results. Ever wish you could zoom in ever farther using Google Maps? Well, with a tiny bit of URL tweaking you can, provided the area you're looking at has big enough images. Check it:

Here is the trick:
Select a location and switch to satellite view. Zoom in as far as you can, and click 'link to this page' at the top right. Now replace the 'z' parameter in the URL with a higher value, e.g. 20, 22, or 23, and wait. Some locations will now show more detailed imagery.

Most of the time, it isn't necessary to send untraceable, anonymous emails. You probably spend more time worrying about fighting spam in your inbox, but sometimes it's useful for educational or training purposes to send an anonymous email. You might be trying to hone your skills at tracking down spammers that have filled your inbox with prescription drug offers or phishing scams, or just want to test it out.

eRightSoft has a freeware program called S.Y.M.P.A that acts as an SMTP client to allow the sending of anonymous emails. It loads up a proxy website on startup with a list of proxies to choose from.

If you want to try sending an untraceable email, choose one of the proxies labeled anonymous and test it by sending an email to yourself. Then check the message header to see if the IP address listed is the one you've been assigned. You can check your IP here. If you don't recognize the IP in the header, then you've probably found a reliable anonymous proxy.

Textmemos is a service that lets the user type in text messages that he wants to have delivered at a certain date and time. All that needs to be done is to enter the cell phone number, the cell phone provider, the date, time and of course the message. As of now 38 different cell phone providers are supported by Textmemos most operating in the United States and Canada with only a handful European ones.
The service itself is completely free and no advertisement will be send in any way to the cell phone number of the recipient. The system behind the service utilized the fact that many cell phone provider accept sms that are send by email which is exactly what Textmemos is doing.

New sms are processed every fifteen minutes and send out to the cell phone providers. All messages are send one hour in advance of the time detailed to avoid late delivery.

My cell phone provider is unfortunately not in the list but I have a friend who is using this service quite often. It works very well. This is nice if you forget birthdays often for instance or other important events.

The three ways to increase your Browsing speed are as follows :

1.When you connect to a web site your computer sends information back and forth. Some of this information deals with resolving the site name to an IP address, the stuff that TCP/IP really deals with, not words. This is DNS information and is used so that you will not need to ask for the site location each and every time you visit the site. Although Windows XP and Windows XP have a pretty efficient DNS cache, you can increase its overall performance by increasing its size. You can do this with the registry entries below: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache\Parameters] "CacheHashTableBucketSize"=dword:00000001 "CacheHashTableSize"=dword:00000180 "MaxCacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000fa00 "MaxSOACacheEntryTtlLimit"=dword:0000012d Make a new text file and rename it to dnscache.reg. Then copy and paste the above into it and save it. Merge it into the registry.

2.It happens with Firefox only.Basically after getting to the hidden config settings you set the browser to request more data that it usually does.

Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

Then to Limit Reservable Bandwidth Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth.
It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab i.e."By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.It works on Win 2000 as well.

Each time you conduct a Google search, Google logs your IP address, the time, your search query, and ID number of the cookie it sends to your browser. This information can be traced directly back to you within 18 months of your search (after that, Google says it will anonymize all the information).

One way to keep Google from finding out what you are searching for it to use a site like Googlonymous, which conducts the search for you and claims not to keep any records. Your IP address is kept hidden.
Another way to hide what you're really searching for it to use TrackMeNot, a Firefox extension that conducts random Google searches. This way, Google has no idea which search is genuine and can't build up a profile based on your search history. In this case, your IP address isn't hidden, but your real searches are hidden in a mass of random search queries.

Alternatively, you can simply go on the KissYouTube website, enter the URL of the video and push “Get it”. The video will be downloaded in .flv format. Free to use.
